Rights Scenarios

An important tool for the analysis phase of any digital library project is the creation of a "Rights Scenario." The scenario guides the team in identifying areas where rights interplay with the creation of the digital library materials, and can help surface legal issues and provides guidance on data collection needs. Each scenario follows the outline:

INTRODUCTION: (Set the scene and give background for general scenario)

Users and Uses:

Characteristics (features): (goals [i.e. access], granularity of ownership, contractual status, etc.)

Possible problems:

Legal issues:

Data requirements issues:

Records management issues:

Privacy/Confidentiality issues:

The template is available in MS Word format: ,,,,,

Scenarios can build on other scenarios, and we recommend that where possible general case scenarios are created that can be adopted in part or in whole by subsequent projects. Our samples scenarios show a general scenario for the archiving of web sites, and particular scenarios that address issues for individual projects.
