Here's an area where technology can't help us. Regardless of what we do to put privacy practices into our software it is meaningless without laws that protect privacy and enforcement mechanisms. The great problem with relying on self-regulation as our privacy policy is that there is no recourse when it fails. The theory behiind self-regulation is that if it doesn't work then customers will be unhappy and companies will have to change. In other words, a massive failure will result in change; but a massive failure means that many individuals will have suffered before the change comes about. That is not a consumer-friendly policy.
