One way to prevent the future mis-use of data is to remove the data from storage after its initial period of use. For example, the cookie that is your shopping cart for an online transaction only needs to exist for the duration of that transaction, after which you have a confirmation from the company in another form (usually email). Cookies that hold preferences or passwords could expire three or six months after their last use. When a cookie has an expiration date many years into the future I have to assume that the site is not engaging me in an honest privacy transaction.
