it's not surprising that there is an element of distrust between consumers and companies because there are a lot of deceptive practices used by companies to gather information that will be used for unstated purposes. One of the more common of these practices is the running of contests. Although it seems naive, many users aren't aware that companies often hold contests in order to gather names and addresses of potential customers. If this principle of the Code of Fair Information Practices were upheld, those names and addresses could only be used in the administering of the contest.
To comply with this rule, cookies would have to state the purpose for which the information was being gathered (or set to be read later). This is, however, another case where the software can inform but it can't enforce: there would also have to be an enforcement mechanism so that users who suspect that there data is being used for another purpose could get redress. |
