We know that there's enough work to be done on the Internet to keep
librarians fully employed for a long time. We need to exercise our skills in
selection, collection, organization, preservation & dissemination.
We also need to be there to offer our expertise on the human side of
information retrieval. You know the saying that if you only have a hammer
everything looks like a nail? Well, to computer scientists, every problem can
be solved with machines and algorithms.
But people come into the library with curiosity and confusion, not with neat
formulas and clear ideas. We help patrons formulate their questions before
we help them find their answers. And that takes more than mere
computation.
